We have had numerous ups and downs with the reds, but this dog attack and losing SAGE and VERONA takes the cakes. SAGE was more of a pet than anything, and we were going to use VERONA to create our line of genetically RED REWS.
The main component in our herd is CASTOR based origins. So our whole herd is "black" based. The problem with having REDS out of CASTORS is the color and under-color problem. I know for a fact, that somewhere down the line there will be a color problem. As of now, all of them have amazing type , fur , and color, but you have to be prepared and think ahead. Now, usually(not always) REWS will have the density to add to your herd. We were having a major density problem regarding the fur in our RED herd. We were going to use VERONA to correct the problem.
Now the C gene constitutes the rew gene. A rew is genetcially ????cc???? and you have to fill in the blanks. I knew this beforehand, but unless one of the bucks carried a rew gene Cc there was no possible way we were going to get REWS out of the first generation. I have learned that anything agouti can carry a gene for generations and it won't show up in the pedigree. You learn not to be surprised, but hope for surprises anyway. Right now our Broken RED doe, Bang Bang, is due today. shw is AABBC_DDee Enen as far as I know. What she throws will tell me a whole lot about what else she carries. She is bred to our genetically chocolate buck Too cool who is aabbccddE_ enen as far as I know. The only way to get chocolates out of this breeding is to have Bang Bang as Bb, and the only way to get reds is to have Too Cool carry non-extension which is Ee. I doubt I will get either but all of these buns will be REW carriers Cc. Depending on what we get, it will be bred back to another red that we have created that also carries the c gene and we will have for sure REWs that are genetically RED.
