Okay, so broken reds are virtually impossible to find in the south. The few I have come across are booted, have poor type, or poor color. Basically, none of them are worth breeding into our lines. After much talk, we've decided to just make our own line of brokens from scratch.
Here's the tricky part. We don't have access to broken reds, so we will have to outcross to other colors. Our choices are: Broken Torts or Broken Castors. Each variety has it's pros and cons. I've heard mixed reviews about both varieties, so I thought I would just find out for myself. Breeding in torts will result in a cleaner colored red with shaded points. Castors will usually darken the red color, but if you have a castor with good type, it will correct the types on your red.
Our plan is to get Torts and Castors that are CHARLIES. That way we will have a 100% of brokens for the colors we want. Having brokens will give us something to compare our red lines to at shows. We won't mind a broken Castor, but we neet a CHARLIE tort or one that has much minimal color compared to a broken Tort .
Sadly, we will be getting rid of the Dutch. I know I can get back into them at any time, we just need to focus on our RED MR for now. We may be getting rid of our OTTERS as well if we don't get Juliet bred.
